Bronze Medallion
Becoming a volunteer member of Surf Life Saving Australia is a great way to give back to the community, make new friends and keep fit and healthy.
If you’ve recently decided to undertake the Bronze Medallion or are thinking about applying but are concerned about your swimming ability GOODSWIM can help. There are many elements to the Bronze Medallion at your local surf club but the (Run Swim Run) element of the course is often where candidates fall short.
In order to commence training for the Bronze Medallion you must be able to complete an unaided swim of 400m in 9 minutes or less (goggles and masks permitted) in a swimming pool of not less than 25m or over a measured open water course.
Too many Australians who grew up by the ocean this may not be a huge ask but if you're not a strong swimmer or come from overseas where there is less focus on learning to swim properly you may benefit from additional tuition and training.
Ocean swimming differs greatly from pool swimming, you need a separate set of skills and understanding to be able to navigate the conditions of open water.
